In the Netherlands, the streets and nature reserves are currently turning white due to the snow. We live in a cheerful winter wonderland, but that sometimes also creates dangerous scenes. For example, a woman (35) skidded away with her car on Thursday, ending up in the canal. Oh no! Fortunately, there is a heroic student (23), who takes a dip in the ice-cold canal in Delft in no time.
Student rescues woman from icy ditch
A lot of people probably don’t imitate the 23-year-old student. Yet a 35-year-old woman is lucky to have the young man who jumps into an icy canal for her on Thursday. The incident all happened in front of his student house on the Kolk in Delft. A car skids due to the slippery conditions and flies into the canal. “While the car flew in, it turned over,” the student told Omroep West. “I saw it happen and sprinted outside, calling everyone from the house to come along.”
When the students arrived outside, the car was already upside down in the water. The student then shouted loudly to see if anyone was inside. The moment the woman shouted back ‘yes’, he immediately took action. He took off his shirt and jumped into the icy water. Brrr! In the video below you can see the heroic action of the student from Delft:

Hammer tap
As soon as the student arrived at the car, he quickly spotted the female driver. “She hit the window with her hands in blind panic,” he told the local broadcaster. That’s how he knew she couldn’t get herself out of the car. Of course he couldn’t leave her behind, so he called for help from his fellow students. First they tried to break the car window with a stone, but that didn’t work. Then someone came with an axe, but it was too big to throw. He ended up smashing the window of the car with a hammer.
Mayor’s cake
Logically, the woman is very grateful to him afterwards. After the student took a quick hot shower, he drank another hot cup of tea with the woman. She was on her way to pick up her three children from school. Naturally, she was in great shock over the incident. The student received several hugs from the woman and later from her husband: “They were extremely grateful.” And not just the woman and her husband! The mayor of Delft, Marja van Bijsterveldt, also stopped by for a thank you. “She came by with cake, so we ate a cake together,” says the student, who always has a strong story for parties and other drinks.
