There is no braid or ponytail at all, but luckily she doesn’t mind that so much. Unruly hair syndrome
In the British town of Suffolk lives 3-year-old Layla, who probably always stands out among the other residents. Layla has a rather special hairstyle, which always looks ‘exploded’. Some may now be thinking: help, do something about it! Unfortunately, the little girl can’t do anything with her fluffy hair. Layla has the so-called unruly hair syndrome. Wait, what? Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of this. In fact, only about a hundred other people in the world have the same problem. So it is a rather rare syndrome.
The unruly hair syndrome results from a gene abnormality, which can often also cause other complaints. Layla also suffers from infected nails, which may be due to this. When someone has this rare condition, the hair grows in all directions. As a result, you can never actually create a nice hairstyle from it. The hair is usually also drier, fluffier and somewhat lighter. This hair syndrome only affects the hair on Layla’s head. The rest of her hair grows normally.
Just touch? No thanks
Anyway, Layla really stands out with her ‘exploded’ hair. She gets a lot of attention, but usually in a positive way. Mother Charlotte tells BBC that people always immediately walk up to her and sometimes just touch it. According to Layla’s mother, this is the “biggest challenge”, also explaining to Layla that people have to ask permission. “How do you teach a child that it’s not okay to touch someone?” said mother Charlotte. Well, the little girl is indeed only three years old. She probably doesn’t fully understand everything yet.
Unfortunately, mother and daughter sometimes also have less nice people approaching them. For example, Layla’s mother tells about a rather aggressive man in the supermarket. He came up to them and said, “Why would you style your child’s hair like that? It looks like you rubbed balloons all over her.” Ouch…

Layla’s mother nevertheless tries to teach her daughter that she is beautiful just the way she is. It doesn’t matter that she is ‘different’. “There’s not much she can do about her hair and I want her to love it,” the mother says. “And I want her to know that people love it too.” That’s why they regularly post photos and videos on Instagram of Layla’s fluffy hairstyle, which receive massive positive responses.
