The ‘fashion mistakes’
Remember when it was once trending to let your thong peek out above your pants? In 2023, this gives most people the shivers – although some claim that the trend is coming back. Or how about the low rise jeans, and then we talk about very low. Most people don’t even have to think about it anymore. Times change, and with them our tastes. What used to be hip is now seen as ‘wrong’ – in quotes, because of course there are no hard rules when it comes to fashion. Moreover, you have to feel comfortable in something.
“It’s incredibly difficult to point out common mistakes,” says stylist Elliot Garnaut in conversation with Vogue USA. “However, there are definitely mistakes that I see more often than others.” If you avoid those mistakes, the stylist states that it only comes down to your attitude. “Dress yourself with confidence, and then it’s hard to get it wrong.”
1. Clothes that don’t fit properly
Clothing that doesn’t fit properly is never a good idea. “A good fit can make the difference between a good and a bad outfit,” says Garnaut. Of course, there is a difference between an oversized sweater and an item that doesn’t fit properly without intention. Do you want something to look like it was made for you? Then make sure it fits properly. Don’t squeeze into those pants that are actually two sizes too small and donate sweaters that have been washed too hot to charity. And say goodbye to bras that are too tight or too loose. You get the yeast.
2. Wearing the wrong accessories
“Accessories complete your outfit, but it’s so easy to do it wrong,” is Garnaut’s opinion. According to the stylist, it is important to check whether a particular accessory is suitable for the occasion. One that horrifies him? Carry bags in the evening. For this moment, he says, it’s better to use sparkly, mini or micro bags. Or at least a shoulder bag.
3. Sneakers at the wrong time
Another faux-pas according to Garnaut: showing up in sneakers sometime in the evening. “Sneakers should not be seen in the dark,” he says. Exception: if you want to dance all night after a very special occasion – a bride wearing Converse can still be cool. Furthermore, there are no exceptions. Beautiful stilettos are always good in the evening. Do you crave comfort? Then you can find relief with ballerinas or loafers.
4. Go crazy with colors and patterns
Okay, time for a tricky one. According to Garnaut, you shouldn’t go too crazy with combining colors and patterns. We know, we currently live in an era where this happens a lot and where it is encouraged a lot. So difficult. “When you do it right, colors and patterns can be very powerful,” says Garnaut. But if you do it incorrectly, you can look like a clown.” The stylist therefore shares an important style rule when you want to wear a striking outfit. “Make sure you wear colors from the same family or that you wear patterns of a similar variety.”
But then again, when it comes to fashion there are really no rules. So wear what you like and what you feel good in.
