Why women suffer from migraines more often than men
We know, it’s not great news, but we were still very curious about why women suffer so much more from those annoying attacks. According to neurologist and migraine expert Gisela Terwindt of the LUMC, this is due to the female hormone estrogen. Spanish scientists from the University Miguel Hernández also indicated that this is indeed the case. Research by the scientists has shown that the hormones stimulate a certain nerve that goes to your brain. But don’t men also have estrogen? That’s right, indeed, but women have much more of this sex hormone. Just like men have more testosterone. In addition, women also suffer much more often from fluctuations in hormone levels, read: menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, you name it. The Spanish scientists do say that more research needs to be done to be one hundred percent certain. But anyway, it all sounds very logical and women do indeed seem to suffer more often from this kind of splitting headache and all the annoying things that go with it.
Birth control pill
The contraceptive pill could also affect the sudden onset of a migraine attack. This is because contraceptive pills can reduce rapid changes in hormone levels. Research is still being done into whether this could actually help, but honestly: how nice would that be?
