Shapewear: how safe is it actually?

It can be harmful to your body.

Shapewear is tight. Pretty tight. But is that actually good for your body? This is what you need to know about it.

Irritable bowel syndrome

If you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), shapewear can unfortunately cause problems. People with IBS often experience pain and bloating. A similar feeling can apparently also be caused by tight clothing. According to nutritional therapist Anna Mapson, the combination of IBS and tight clothing can cause problems. “Clothes with a tight waistband can have an impact on your digestion. This can lead to gas, bloating and abdominal cramps,” she explains to Stylist. “People with IBS often have a hypersensitivity to these complaints, which means they will experience more pain than normal.”

Skinny jeans

Speaking of tight clothing… Several experts agree that skinny jeans are the least comfortable. They often have a tight waistband that fits where your small intestine is located. This is where most of the digestive process takes place. If it gets tangled, you have a good chance of feeling uncomfortable and bloated. Mapson therefore advises not to wear tight clothing if you know you are going to have a long day, eat a large meal or sit a lot. “It’s important to have room to expand a little.”

Bacteria and waste products

Even if you do not suffer from IBS, it is wise to be careful with shapewear, according to Mapson. “If your digestion is continuously slowed down for months due to the tight clothing you wear, it can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria in your small intestine. This can be treated with antibiotics or supplements, but it often takes quite a long time for the problem to be completely resolved.” It can also compromise your immune system. Tight outfits ensure that waste products can no longer be properly removed by the lymph nodes. As a result, these waste products can accumulate in your body and you are more likely to contract infections. From now on, it’s better to leave the skinny jeans and shapewear pants hanging.
