Anyone who visits the supermarket every day will soon discover that it is not always cheap. You often take something extra with you that you ultimately didn’t need at all. Pay in cash
To better understand your weekly or monthly expenses on groceries, it can help to pay for them with cash. Leave your bank card at home and take a fixed amount of cash with you. This way you avoid going over your budget faster.
Fresh!
It’s time to let go of the jars of pasta sauce and baby food, because making fresh tomato sauce, baby food or mashed potatoes, for example, saves more money than you think. In addition, cooking from jars and bags is also unhealthier. Add fresh herbs yourself, it is much tastier and cheaper.
Check your refrigerator
To prevent you from purchasing products twice and later discovering that you already had an ingredient at home, it is useful to check what you do and do not have at home before shopping. This way you don’t have to throw away expired products later.
Do the shopping once a week
Shopping every day is more expensive than doing all the groceries for the week in one day. This also makes you less likely to take snacks and the like with you. For example, you can do the shopping every Monday and then go shopping a few times during the week for fresh fruit and vegetables.
Don’t go to the supermarket hungry
Make sure you enter the supermarket with a full belly. This means you are less likely to buy snacks or other extra products that you don’t actually need. Stick to your list as much as possible and try to put as few extra products on the treadmill as possible.
Don’t throw away your leftovers
Do you have any dinner left? Then save it for the next day and don’t throw it away. Organize a ‘tapas evening’ or take your supper warmed up to work the next day. Be creative!
Grocery list
For many, making a shopping list is self-evident, but there are still plenty of people who go into the store without a list and decide for themselves in the supermarket what they are going to eat that evening. Tip from us: don’t. Making a list helps you maintain your fixed budget and ensures that you do not buy more than what is on your list.
Visit different supermarkets
As nice as it is to visit your favorite local supermarket, it is not always cheap. Start by comparing supermarkets in your area: are vegetables cheaper at Lidl or meat less expensive at Jumbo? You can save money by doing your shopping at different supermarkets. One advantage: supermarkets are often close to each other, for example in the center, so there is not much distance between them!
Go alone
Doing your daily or weekly shopping with the kids or your partner is fun, but let’s be honest: it’s much easier to persuade each other to get more than necessary. Before you know it, your cart will be full of goodies, even though you really can’t afford that at all. Therefore, it is best to go to the supermarket alone.
Eliminate meat from your diet
Being a vegetarian has many advantages. One of them is that it costs a lot less money. Meat is one of the most expensive ingredients in a meal. Vegetables are much cheaper and healthier. Do you still miss meat a bit? Then there are plenty of (cheap) alternatives.
