Fact or fiction: wine gives worse hangovers than beer

‘Beer after wine gives venom, wine after beer gives pleasure’: Drinking drinks together may be nice for a change, but certainly not a good idea. If you start drinking, you should know that you may get a hangover tomorrow. How bad the hangover is depends on the type of drink.

Wine or beer?

Drinking beer after drinking wine is said to lead to bad hangovers, according to the saying ‘beer after wine is bad’. There are several reasons for this. Beer contains carbon dioxide, which means that alcohol is absorbed into your body more quickly. Wine also often has a higher alcohol percentage than beer, which makes you drunk faster. If you then switch to beer, your judgment will no longer be at its best and you will start drinking even faster.

But is this really true? Researchers from the German Universität Witten/Herdecke investigated this in 2019. They divided the test subjects into three groups: the first group received beer and then wine, and the second group received wine and then beer. The third group received only wine or only beer. Each group was given similar amounts of alcohol, switching after a week. After each trial, the test subjects recorded how bad their hangover was. The result: the order of drinking has no influence on how bad the hangover was the next day. It does matter how much you drink, and your age also plays a role. So beer after wine or wine after beer doesn’t matter!

Which drink gives the worst hangovers?

So drinking together isn’t that bad at all, but which drinks cause the worst hangovers? A study by Addictions.com found out. What seems? Wine hits worse than beer, but the ultimate winner is tequila, followed by vodka. In third place is wine, especially red wine. Then come whiskey, beer, rum and gin.

Which wine?

Do you want to feel good in the morning after drinking wine? Then it is best to drink white wine. This has to do with so-called ‘congeners’: the harmful by-products in wine. This is mainly found in red wine, which causes you to wake up feeling more tired than drinking white wine or rosé. In addition, red wine often contains a higher alcohol percentage than light wines.

Conclusion

Wine does not give worse hangovers than beer, it purely depends on how much you drink. To avoid being broke, you can of course drink less, but also pay attention to what makes you drunk the quickest. Tequila and vodka are the real culprits, so try to avoid them more often if you need to go out feeling fresh and fruity the next day.
