The royal is blowing out 33 candles today.
Today Princess Alexandra, the daughter of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, celebrates her 33rd birthday. Although the royal herself prefers to stay out of the royal spotlight, there are still a number of interesting facts about her. Happy birthday Alexandra!
1. Copy from Grandma Josephine
Alexandra is said to be very similar in character to her paternal grandmother, the Belgian Princess Joséphine. Although she brought luxury and elegance to the Luxembourg principality, she also brought so much royal reserve that there was no doubt ‘that she did not want to associate herself with people who do not fall into the category of “our kind of people”.’ She once ended a friendship because the friend in question did not immediately know who Rousseau was. Fortunately, things aren’t that bad with Alexandra! (And in case you want to know, Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a groundbreaking philosopher.)

2. Chance for the throne
She is fourth in line of succession to the throne. At first she didn’t count at all because she was a girl, but in 2011 this ancient rule was abolished. Because brother Louis waived his rights when he married his girlfriend Tessy, Alexandra was able to take his place.
3. Fan of the Spice Girls
As a teenager, Alexandra was a huge Spice Girls fan, with a soft spot for Baby Spice. She even had a Union Jack dress à la Ginger Spice, but was under no circumstances allowed to wear it outside the castle.
4. No need for royal spotlight
Alexandra is not the most striking Luxembourg royal. She regularly participates in Grand Ducal events, but always stands a little at the back. She seems to have no need for the spotlight, and also attaches little importance to her family’s tiara status. “She is very serious,” said a former fellow student a few years ago. “She’s not really concerned with appearances.”
5. Lots of brothers
Alexandra Joséphine Teresa Charlotte Marie Wilhelmine is the fourth child and only daughter of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg. She has four brothers who all adore her and could walk unbelievably wide towards children who were bullying Alexandra in the schoolyard. Her brothers were also seen as her three bodyguards. Cute!

6. Real language child
The princess is a polyglot who speaks fluent Luxembourgish, French, English and Spanish and is fluent in German and Italian.
7. Baby on the way
At the end of last year, the Luxembourg court announced that Princess Alexandra is expecting her first child. The happy news was shared on their official Instagram page: “Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess have the immense pleasure to announce that Princess Alexandra and Monsieur Nicolas Bagory are expecting their first child. The birth is expected in the spring.”
This first offspring for Alexandra and Nicolas is of course not the first grandchild for Henri and María Teresa. This little sprout will soon have no less than five nephews and a niece to play with!
