Prince Constantin, the younger brother of Prince Alois, has died at the age of 51.
The royal family of Liechtenstein is in mourning following the unexpected death of Prince Constantin. He died on December 5 at the age of 51. Constantin was the youngest son of the monarch, Prince Hans Adam II, and was seventh in line to the throne.
Official declaration of death
The prince died on Tuesday and on Wednesday, December 6, the Liechtenstein court issued a statement confirming his death. “The court regrets to announce that Prince Constantin of Liechtenstein passed away unexpectedly on December 5, 2023,” the statement read. The prince is survived by his wife, Princess Marie of Liechtenstein, and their children Prince Moritz (20), Princess Georgina (18), and Prince Benedikt (15). The cause of death is unknown. It is also not yet known when his funeral will take place.
Mother Marie
The prince died just two years after his mother, Princess Marie of Liechtenstein, who died two years ago at the age of 81. Marie suffered a stroke on August 18, 2021 and died in hospital a few days later. After her death, the country went into national mourning for seven days, while her body lay in state for two days in St. Florin’s Cathedral.
Who was Constantin?
The late Prince Constantin was an ardent environmentalist. He had a special interest in agriculture and forestry and was also involved in sustainable energy. He was a member of the Austrian Council for Sustainable Development. This group is based in Vienna and focuses on implementing the ‘sustainable development goals’ in the UN 2030 agenda.
Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein, located between Switzerland and Austria, is a parliamentary democracy, led by the monarch. In 2004, Hans Adam transferred his powers to his eldest son Alois. Although he has transferred his powers to the next generation, he himself remains in office. The title of monarch is only transferred when he dies.
