Burning candles is more unhealthy than you think, and here’s why

Especially during the cold and chilly days, we like to light a warm and cozy candle. However, this fun habit does not seem to be good for your health. But is that really the case, and why? We will explain it to you.

Ventilate

Burning candles does not have to be unhealthy. It does depend on the amount, how often they burn, what material they are made of and whether there is good ventilation in the house. Ventilation is especially important: it distributes the number of soot particles better throughout the room, reducing your health risks.

Harmful substances

The substances released when burning candles made of paraffin can be compared to substances that people ingest while smoking or barbecuing. If the smoke from the candle appears black and you notice black deposits on the inside of a glass or lantern, this means that the candle contains carcinogenic substances. These substances not only remain on the glass, but also drift through the air. The smaller and the more poorly ventilated the room, the more likely you are to inhale these carcinogens. The amount of substances released is extremely small. Of course, it depends on how many you burn, but unless you burn twenty candles in a small cupboard and sit in it yourself with the doors closed, you will hardly notice these substances.

Different types of candles

Of course there are different types of candles: there is the standard version with paraffin, but also variants made from soy or beeswax. This soy or beeswax contains little to no carcinogens, making them better for your health. These variants are also a lot more environmentally friendly, and therefore a more sustainable option. However, you must ensure that the fuse is not too long for all types and that it is not in a draft. You better also pay attention to scented candles: regardless of the wax they are made with, these candles are given extra coloring and fragrances. These substances are not harmful, but can cause allergic reactions. If you notice that you or someone you know is getting very stuffy or is bothered by the smell, it is best to extinguish the candle and ventilate the room well.
