Taylor Swift is currently the biggest pop star in the world, but despite her success, she doesn’t seem to have forgotten her feud with Kanye West. Taylor recently took a very subtle swipe at the rapper. Here’s what you need to know about it.
Taylor vs Kanye
For those who aren’t up to date on the Taylor Swift-Kanye West feud, here’s a quick refresher. In 2016, Kanye released a new song called Famous, which mentioned Taylor, but not in a very nice way. Taylor had a problem with it because Kanye called her a bitch in the song. The rapper received a lot of criticism for the lyrics, but he claimed Taylor had given him permission to use the words. According to Taylor, this was completely untrue. As a result, Kim Kardashian, West’s wife at the time, decided to get involved. She decided to share a video recording of a phone conversation between the two artists. The footage makes it appear as if Kanye did indeed get permission to use the lyrics in his new song. As a result, Taylor received a lot of hate on the internet and was called a snake, including by Kim Kardashian. In 2020, evidence surfaced that Kim’s video had been edited and that Taylor had not given permission for her name to be used in the song. In the meantime, Swifties were treated to the album Reputation, which Taylor wrote in part about the feud. The incident caused Swift to isolate herself from the outside world for a year.
The subtle dig at Kanye
And Taylor clearly hasn’t forgotten all about it. On August 15, Taylor dropped a new version of her most recent album The Tortured Poets Department. This album contains a live recording of a performance in which the singer sings her song thanK you aimEe. Due to the subtle choice of capitalization in the title of the song, fans quickly knew that the song is about Kim Kardashian. But when Swift made her new version of the song available on her webshop, it quickly became apparent that the title of the song was written slightly differently this time. Now it read thank You aimEe. If you combine the two capital letters, it becomes Ye, or Kanye West’s desired artist name. And it is certainly no coincidence that Swift decided to release this new version of her album at that very moment. Kanye had released a new album a week earlier that reached number two in the charts, just below The Tortured Poets Department. So chances are Swift wanted to prevent West’s new album Vultures 2 from stealing her number one spot. And whether or not it was because of this new release, she succeeded, because the album is still number one. Oh well, you forgive, you forget, but you never let it go.
