A sweet moment for Silvia and Sofía, but it wasn’t very festive…
Yesterday the Olympic Games were concluded in style, and that meant partying! Dancing! Singing! And in the royal box? There was only a sparse clap by the royal delegates present.
Olympic Games
From the grand opening ceremony onwards, royals have been showing up at the Games in their national uniforms – it’s part of the game to show yourself so involved in the performances of ‘your’ athletes. Apart from that, the Games are a great excuse for the average monarch to let loose.
The closing ceremony is of course a party, but the royals were a bit absent. In the stands, only Prince Albert, King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia and Queen Sofía were spotted. And not much more than obediently clapping their hands happened.

There was a sweet moment between Silvia and Sofía, who shared a pair of binoculars to better study the spectacle.
But between performances by Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg, an appearance by Tom Cruise, and thousands of athletes in a party mood, things didn’t really get going in the stands.
Stay-at-homes
Of course, it is also summer vacation for the Euroyals at the moment, and so there were plenty of princes who did not travel to Paris (again), but shared a proud message for their team via social media.
Prince William – with a beard! – and Princess Kate expressed their pride in a casual video supported by various national and international celebrities…

“What a great performance by our #TeamNL at the Olympic Games of Paris 2024!”, can be read with the photo. “Beautiful competitions and an overwhelming result. We are very proud of all participants and look forward to receiving the medal winners at Paleis Huis ten Bosch!” Signed, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.
The traditional reception at Paleis Huis ten Bosch is planned for tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday 13 August. On that day, the official tribute programme for the Olympic Games will take place first, after which they will leave for the reception at the royal couple in the afternoon. Hopefully, the festive mood will be more there by then!
