Advice from a dermatologist

Perfume and certain chemicals in clothing can really irritate eczema-prone skin. It is not rocket science to avoid those things. But according to dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie it is also wise to be sensible about the way you wash clothes. And dr. Downie should know, she treats clients with eczema in her practice and she also suffers from the condition herself. The dermatologist shares with Glamial four things you should pay attention to when washing your clothes.

Always wash new clothes

You bought new clothes, you absolutely love them and you want to put those new items on right away. We get it. However, it is better to wait a little longer. In this case, patience is literally a virtue. “You can’t just wear something without washing it,” says Dr. Downie. This not only applies to your clothing, but also to things such as bedding and towels. “You don’t know which one additives and chemicals still on the fabric.”

Use so-called Free & Clear detergents

Dr. Downie also recommends using detergents that do not contain dyes or perfumes, which dermatological tested his and that hyperallergenic are the so-called Free & Clear detergents. This way, you don’t have to worry about irritating ingredients getting into your clothes after washing.

Do not use fabric softeners

Nobody likes towels that feel like sandpaper, but try to resist the temptation to use one fabric softener to use if you suffer from eczema. “Fabric softeners can make your skin itch,” explains Dr. Downie out. Fortunately, the dermatologist does not think in problems, but in solutions. For example, she suggests that you can put a number of wool balls – so-called dryer balls – in the dryer to keep your clothes softer.

Use dry cleaning protocols

Unfortunately, some clothes cannot be easily washed at home. Do you ever take your clothes to the dry cleaner? Then ask if they have certain protocols for washing. There’s a good chance they have one for people with sensitive skin, so make sure you take advantage of it!
