Reason enough for a lot of royal festivities.
Today marks exactly ten years since King Felipe was proclaimed as the new King of Spain. His father, King Juan Carlos I, abdicated shortly before. Earlier this week, the Casa Real shared some dreamy photos of the monarch, and now it has also been announced what is on his agenda today and tomorrow.
Anniversary
After months full of scandals, health problems and commotion, King Juan Carlos announced on June 2, 2014 that he would abdicate. His son Felipe, the then Prince of Asturias, had to take over from him. Since then, Felipe has devoted himself wholeheartedly to the good cause, and above all: distanced himself as much as possible from the decadence, corruption, adultery and frivolities that so characterized his father at the end of his reign.
With his great love Letizia at his side and their two beautiful daughters, Leonore and SofÃa, his proclamation took place on June 19, 2014.
Planning Wednesday
To put the Spanish king in the spotlight, there is of course also a small party. For example, a military parade took place this morning on the Patio de la ArmerÃa, a square located between the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid. This was followed by the royal family from the balcony.
Following this, a reception took place in the Gasparini Hall with a hundred lucky guests, including nineteen people who received a knighthood. Felipe’s eldest daughter Leonore, the Princess of Asturias, presented the prize to the youngest recipient here. The program then included a speech by the king himself, followed by a joint lunch with all those present.
Tonight, sisters Leonore and SofÃa will visit the Gallery of the Royal Collections, in the company of 40 young people. To end the evening festively, a concert by the Royal Guard will take place in the Plaza de Oriente and violinist Ara Malikian will perform from one of the balconies of the royal palace overlooking Bailén Street.
Thursday
But the plans surrounding Felipe’s 10-year reign do not end there. Tomorrow he, together with his wife, will open an exhibition of 23 photos in the Royal Palace. The series summarizes the ten years in which he headed the Spanish government. Other festivities are spread over the rest of the year, and will last until June 2025. Felipe and Letizia will visit various cities in Spain. In short: one big party for the Spanish king’s jubilee!
