The state visit Spain-Netherlands has started!

We have had to wait a long time for it, but today the time has finally come: King Felipe and Queen Letizia are in the Netherlands for a two-day state visit. In this blog you can read more about the fashion of the queens.

The Netherlands and Spain have a shared history and are connected by shared values and interests. The countries have had diplomatic relations since 1648 (the end of the Eighty Years’ War) and the historical bond between the two countries goes back even further. Within Europe, the Netherlands and Spain have been connected for centuries on a political, economic, cultural and social level. Political cooperation with Spain has intensified in recent years. Both countries work together on issues such as open strategic autonomy and organized crime. Economic ties are also close. For example, Spain is the seventh export destination for the Netherlands and the Netherlands imports much of our fruit and vegetables from Spain. In addition, major investments are being made on both sides in the field of green hydrogen to keep energy available and affordable in the future. Many Dutch people feel connected to Spain and even settle there (semi-)permanently. Many Spaniards also move to the Netherlands to study and work here. On a cultural level, there are regular exchanges of art and cultural practitioners, from the Old Masters to contemporary artists who link art and culture to socially relevant themes such as equality and sustainability.

Program
The ladies and gentlemen both have their own programme. Together they start with a welcome ceremony on Dam Square. After a wreath-laying ceremony by the Spanish royal couple, the queens have a free afternoon (read: make-up work), while the gentlemen visit the Cruyff Foundation and the Amsterdam port. In the evening the program will continue with a state banquet, for which a separate blog will be opened.
