Time for a Taste of Spring?
In the heart of South Tyrol/Südtirol lies one of the most beautiful historic towns in Italy: Klausen or Chiusa in Italian. In this charming town it is wonderful to stroll through winding, medieval streets. Via a gate and stone stairs in the city wall you reach the Säben monastery, located high on the rock. If you leave the city, you walk through a paradise of vineyards and chestnut forests.
The area around Klausen connects several villages that are definitely worth a visit. Barbian/Barbiano, on a sun-drenched ridge, is known for its leaning tower and beautiful waterfalls. The romantic Feldthurns/Velturno is called chestnut village: there are 3,336 chestnut trees. And near Villanders/Villandro you will find the second largest alpine meadow in South Tyrol, the Villanderer Alm.
The region is the northernmost wine region in Italy and is known for its (critically acclaimed) white wines. Sylvaner, Kerner, Gewürztraminer and Riesling grow there. The residents cherish the wine culture, maintain traditions and know what enjoyment is, as evidenced by the wine events, specialty weeks and farmers’ markets. Other well-known regional products are herbs and the wonderfully scented mountain pine that grows on the Villanderer Alm.
Celebrate the South Tyrolean spring
Many events are organized under the name Taste of Spring until the end of May. The arrival of spring is celebrated with national specialties, local wine and music. Three must visits to celebrate with:
- Herbal market: April 27 in Feldthurns.
- At the winemaker: open wine cellar day, May 4 at various winemakers in Klausen, Feldthurns and Villanders.
- Sabiona – The white wine festival: May 25 in Klausen.
