‘And especially my way of thinking about food’
From crash diets to takeaway food, Trijntje Oosterhuis (51) did not always live a healthy life. But the takeaway queen has now transformed into a kitchen princess. “My pantry is now healthier, but no less tasty,” says the singer.
Diets
“I think I’ve tried every diet in the hope of losing weight. Whenever I had a concert series or big job on television, I knew exactly which crash diet I had to do to lose a few kilos. I’ll starve myself for a while, because then everything will be fine, I thought. Now I know better and see that I had a bad relationship with food. Those crash diets are a huge burden on your body, because after months of working out, the kilos came back on. After all, I can’t keep eating lettuce with a piece of chicken fillet on it for weeks. I yo-yoed for years and I just didn’t feel good about it emotionally and physically anymore. And my body no longer accepted it because I had completely messed up my metabolism.”
“Now I wonder why I kept trying so fanatically to lose weight. Because I didn’t sell one more or less concert ticket because I was – in my opinion – too heavy. Because perhaps I wanted to conform to the prevailing beauty ideal at the time? Can we please stop thinking we are too fat and thinking we need to fix this quickly?”
Healthier eating pattern
“I myself have a genetic tendency to gain weight and I am now 51, mother of four children and have been suffering from my thyroid since the birth of my youngest. It doesn’t work anymore. Due to my work, my lifestyle is irregular and taking away food was often easier than cooking myself. Because, what was I supposed to make next?”
“I had no inspiration in the kitchen until I came across the Lazyfitgirl Method, a system for a healthier diet and mindset. No, I am not on a diet, but I have changed the way I eat. And especially my way of thinking about food. Take a cup of vanilla yoghurt: it contains the equivalent of eight sugar cubes. Now I buy a sugar-free version. I bake French toast with whole wheat bread and I make pancakes from scratch: with banana and oat flakes.”
