A fashion tic that we still can’t get enough of.
If we have learned anything from Mabel’s clothing style in recent years, it is that the princess and bows are inextricably linked. When possible, Mabel takes just about every opportunity to add a bow to her outfit. This special fashion tic resulted in a lot of memorable looks.
Special wedding dress
We are first introduced to Mabel’s love for bows on April 24, 2004. Then she pledges her eternal loyalty to her great love, Prince Friso, in Oude Kerk in Delft. At the ceremony, the princess appears in a particularly striking gown by Viktor & Rolf with a three-meter-long train and no fewer than 248 bows.

It became a fashion moment that many royalty watchers will not soon forget. Now, almost twenty years later, the wedding dress is once again put in the spotlight. It will be exhibited in the Kunsthalle in Munich until October 6. Mabel took a look herself and could – understandably – barely hold back her tears.
Well-tied outfits
The fact that Mabel made her debut as a princess with 248 bows did not prevent her from regularly appearing in a well-tied outfit in the years that followed. Like during the presentation of the Prince Claus Award in 2014…

…Or a year later during a benefit dinner in Amsterdam, where the princess opted for an even less subtle bow.

In 2018, the princess stole the show in this cocktail dress with huge bows at the bottom…

…but for the moment with the greatest impact, we have to go back to April 30, 2013, when Willem-Alexander was inaugurated as King of the Netherlands.

During that ceremony, Mabel wears a long black dress with a white sleeve with a bow on it that symbolizes the missing Prince Friso. Mabel’s great love has been in a coma for more than a year after his skiing accident.

After he dies, Mabel wears the same dress in a shortened version during the memorial service. A beautiful gesture from the much too young widow, which we will never forget.
