The tulip season is in full swing: high time to bring a bouquet into your home. But how do you prevent them from hanging?
1. Hole in the tulips
Poke a hole through the tulip with a needle. You do this right under the bud, at the top of the flower stem. This will cause them to stop growing. Don’t worry, this won’t kill them. However, it ensures that they will remain the same length and therefore will not droop easily.
2. Sugar
Sugar is a good food for flowers, and so is the tulip. By dissolving a scoop of sugar in the water you will extend the life of the bunch of flowers, so they will last even longer! You often receive a bag of flower food with the bouquet, always use this.
3. The right vase
Tulips can grow about two inches after you purchase them. That is also the reason why they will become crooked over time. The right vase is therefore crucial to combat this. Place the flowers in a vase that reaches at least halfway up the stems. This way they can still grow sufficiently, but they won’t hang over the edge!
4. Copper
Copper makes the water more acidic, and because the water becomes more acidic, it prevents the growth of bacteria. A copper coin such as a five cent coin will do wonders to help you enjoy the beautiful bouquet you have brought into your home for longer. Place a coin in the vase and then fill it with water.
5. The right place
Tulips start growing early, when it is still cold. They do not like to be in a warm place such as a radiator or in the sun. This will cause them to bloom and droop more quickly, which is something you don’t want if you want to enjoy the flowers for a long time. So look for a good spot with sufficient shade or indirect sunlight, and make sure it is not too hot.
6. Clean water
Maybe we don’t have to tell you this, but clean water is very important for your bouquet of tulips. And not just when you put them in the vase for the first time, but they will need to be provided with fresh water every day. The flowers are very fond of it and slurp up a lot of moisture. And also make sure that you do not cut the tulips at an angle, but rather straight: this ensures that the flowers do not drink too much, which can also cause them to droop.
