At the time, there was a lot of commotion about the name that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan had given their youngest daughter. For example, Princess Lilibet was named after a sweet nickname that intimates had used for Queen Elizabeth in her younger years. According to the Sussexes themselves, this had happened entirely with her approval, but a member of Elizabeth’s court has now stated that none of this is true.
New book
Another week, another row surrounding the Sussexes. After documentaries, endless interviews, and memoirs, you might think that all the dirty laundry has been aired out by now, but today a particularly remarkable piece of news has emerged.
Author Robert Hardman was working on a biography of King Charles, entitled Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story. Parts of this will appear in the Daily Mail, and the book should be on the shelves from next Thursday.
Princess Lilibet
According to this book, H&M’s decision to name their daughter Lilibet, and then claim that Liz had given her approval, would certainly not be appreciated. Since the name Lilibet was only used by Elizabeth’s inner circle, this immediately caused some skepticism when it was announced.
It then went viral in the media. For example, the BBC shared at the time that they had learned from a palace source that permission had not been requested. According to Hello! Magazine, other sources reported that a conversation had taken place, but that Elizabeth did not feel she could say no.
Subsequently, a spokesperson for the Sussexes personally announced that Her Majesty the Queen had of course been consulted. “The Duke has spoken to his family ahead of the announcement – in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called. During that conversation, he shared his desire to name his daughter Lilibet as a tribute to her. If she had not been supportive about this, they would not have used the name.”
In short: don’t complain guys, grandma has already given her approval.
Furious
In the book, Hardman states that a member of the British court has a somewhat different story. “Elizabeth was ‘angrier than she had ever seen her’ in 2021 after the Sussexes announced she had given her approval to name their daughter ‘Lilibet’, the queen’s childhood nickname,” the biography reads. .
Hardman goes on to say that after the public uproar, the couple threatened to take legal action if other media thought of suggesting (like the BBC) that the reality was different from what they proclaimed. Ultimately, all those threats of lawsuits fizzled out – but will the Sussexes let these new claims slide? That remains to be seen…
