We all know that exercise is good for health, but how many steps per day is good against premature death?
10,000 steps against premature death
Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows that any extra steps above 2,200 steps per day help reduce health risks such as heart disease. These positive effects apply up to approximately 10,000 steps per day. The same study shows that people who walk between 9,000 steps and 10,500 steps daily have the lowest risk of death, according to the study. Taking this number of steps daily means that you are no less than 39 percent less likely to die at an early age. An amount of approximately 9,700 steps per day is also beneficial for the smallest risk of heart attacks and strokes: this risk is reduced by as much as twenty percent.
Active
While we previously thought we needed to take at least 10,000 steps per day to improve our health, this has now increased to around 2,200 steps, thanks to the new research. Every step from this number contributes to a healthier lifestyle. For example, you can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke or premature death by exercising. And not only can the pedometer be turned on, but other forms of exercise are also beneficial. Scientists recommend an average of 150 minutes of exercise per week, which is just over twenty minutes per day. Below you will find tips to get that exercise:
- Walking: The most obvious method is walking. To the supermarket, to work, with the dog, with a friend, or just a walk alone. It helps to clear your head and breathe fresh air, while keeping track of your steps.
- To the gym: Are you more into fitness? Do cardio exercises or lift weights at the gym. Not only can you achieve your health goals, you can also make new friends and motivate each other.
- Cycling: Take your bike more often for parts that are closer. For example, you don’t have to take the car to the supermarket around the corner, and certainly not to friends who live nearby. Cycling is healthy and fun, and you feel more satisfied when you get the sun’s rays on your face. Or you can warm up after a cold bike ride at the house of those same friends. Either way, you’ll feel better after cycling.
