Watching a film or series for the 100th time: why do we like this so much?

Although the choice of films and series is very wide, you always come back to that one comfort show. The same characters and the same events over and over again… How come we keep watching this film or series? We will explain it to you.

Searching takes too much energy

According to Marta Calderero, a psychology teacher at the Open University in Catalonia, there is a psychological reason behind it. Due to the wide choice of films and series, there is a good chance that you will feel overwhelmed. And when you’ve finally found one that suits your needs, you still have to get acquainted with the new characters and fictional worlds. In short, it takes a lot of energy. And we often simply don’t feel like doing that. On top of that, we ultimately don’t like the film or series at all. And if you don’t run the risk of wasting your free time on this, it is much easier to choose the ‘safe’ option.

It is healthy

A study by The University of Chicago Press has even shown that it is healthy to rewatch films and series. It not only provides a nice, comfortable feeling, it also gives you a feeling of happiness. You may also learn something about yourself. Because even though the series doesn’t change, your view of the world probably does. This will make you experience the film or series differently.

Happy memories

If you felt good the first time you watched a movie or series, chances are that these emotions will arise again when you watch that movie or series again. And because everyone is looking for the feeling of happiness, it is logical that it will be a comfort show. This film or series may give you a nice, nostalgic feeling.

It provides relaxation

The predictability of the film or series gives you a relaxing feeling. A feeling you probably need after a day full of stimuli. Watching a comfort show is therefore a nice way to relieve some stress. There is no chance that you will be disappointed. Something that is possible when you start a new film or series.

You build a connection

Finally, it feels like you’re building some kind of connection with the film or series. It’s an exaggeration to say that you start to see the characters as family, but nevertheless you build a kind of familiar bond with them. This way the film or series gives you a feeling of trust and connection.
