Beate is the only participant of The Bachelor who was allowed to keep her phone with her during the adventure on Zanzibar. In an interview with Grazia, Beate reveals why she received this special exception.
Diabetes
During the Bachelor adventure, the intention is for participants to completely disconnect from their normal lives, including their phones. But there was an exception to this rule for Beate. And why? Well, that has everything to do with her diabetes.
Three weeks of stuff for The Bachelor
Beate imposed a condition on the production that she would only participate if she could keep her cell phone. “You have to pack your suitcase as if you were going to the finals. That’s why I had three weeks’ worth of stuff with me: thirty IVs, six sensors and enough insulin for a month.”
Connected to an app
And why the cell phone? “My insulin pump is connected to an app on my phone. That’s why I brought a phone without a SIM card. This phone only contained the apps that I use for my diabetes. I always had that phone with me. It was together with my other diabetes supplies in the pink bag that I always have with me during the recordings. I also always had Dextro with me.”
Clear agreements
Beate did not have her real phone with her. “I obviously had to hand in my phone, which has everything on it, such as WhatsApp, to production.” Didn’t Beate feel the urge to secretly do other things with her cell phone? “On this phone there were only the apps for my diabetes. Nothing else. In addition, I had also made clear agreements with production. I always take good care of myself, but I also trusted that I could rely on them. In return, I wanted of course also that they trust me.”
