Savings survey
Savings platform Raisin has conducted research into the savings behavior of Dutch people and came to a very clear conclusion. More people than you think suffer from financial stress. For example, 37 percent of female respondents indicate that they sometimes worry about their financial situation. About ten percent of women indicate that they do not save, compared to eight percent of men. But what should you actually ‘save’? And does the average Dutch person come close to that? We will explain this to you below.
You should save that much money every month
Unfortunately, in an expensive society, saving is no longer always self-evident. Many people struggle with their financial situation and can only dream of putting money aside every month. The costs of daily life simply add up quickly and many people nowadays choose to enjoy life a little. As a result, savings goals are sometimes put on the back burner.
For several reasons, it is smart to put as much money aside as possible every month. This is of course completely within your budget and will look different for every household. NIBUD recommends putting at least ten percent of your net income in your savings account. For example, if you have 2,500 euros net per month, you would save 250 euros.
Saving behavior of the average Dutch person
That ten percent is what you ‘should’ save, but how does that work in reality in the Netherlands? Raisin’s survey showed that we Dutch adhere to this ‘rule’ quite well. 90.7 percent of Dutch people actually save part of this. On the other hand, 42.5 percent save less or as much as NIBUD’s advice. The real average in the Netherlands is 16.1 percent of the monthly income. Not bad!
