Don’t make them!
Your interior says a lot about you as a person. And when someone comes to visit, we naturally want to make our house look as good as possible. However, there are a few interior design mistakes that can make your home look messy. At least, if we have to believe interior designers. They consider the following things to be an absolute no-go.
1. The wrong size of a carpet
Are you also a fan of warm feet? Then you most likely have a carpet near your bed or sofa. According to interior designer Audrey Kuether, sizing the wrong carpet is one of the most common mistakes. Audrey: ‘I often see carpets that don’t quite fit under the furniture. This makes the room look out of proportion.’ It is therefore important that your carpet fits completely under the furniture.
2. Too much furniture in a room
When you have an open space, you want to fill it with furniture. A sofa, a dining area, a bookcase and so on. Unfortunately, an excess of furniture makes your home feel much smaller. According to interior designer Emily Henderson, it is therefore important to create negative spaces where you have no furniture. “This makes you feel less trapped,” Emily explains.
3. Furniture that matches
Do you have a sofa that matches the dining room chairs? According to Bobby Berk, the interior designer of the Netflix program Queer Eye, it is better to leave that alone from now on. When you take the complete set out of the showroom, it seems as if there is little feeling in the room. According to him, it is therefore best to put together furniture based on feeling or design. “This creates an interesting space that reflects who you are as a person,” says Bobby.
4. Curtains that don’t fit
It certainly pays to have your curtains made to measure. According to Bobby, you should hang curtains under the ceiling and not at the same height as the window. This makes the space seem larger. Curtains should also fall to the floor and not hang above it. Bobby: ‘It makes it look like you bought the wrong length or ran out of fabric.’ And these kinds of details can keep the room from shining.
