Do you go for a quick errand or do you spend hours on your phone in the toilet? That often differs per person, but did you know that sitting on the toilet for a long time is actually not good for you at all? We explain why.
Health risks
Sitting on the toilet for a long time is not good for you, but why? For example, you may suffer from hemorrhoids. These are located on the inside of your anus, but can sag outside the anus if you sit for a long time and sometimes strain. This can be very painful. Some people can also get constipation from spending a lot of time on the toilet. This, in combination with hemorrhoids, is extra painful. Hard stools can cause cracks in the skin around the anus. This is already the most sensitive place on the body, and with hemorrhoids or inflamed skin you can imagine that it will only get worse. Ouch! Fortunately, hemorrhoids can recede, but if someone is bothered by them a lot, they can consult a doctor for help.
Maximum toileting
So sitting on the toilet for a long time is not smart. Yet many people want to take a long moment for themselves on the toilet, scroll on their phone, or even read a book. Opinions are divided on how long makes a toilet session too long. Some people think ten to fifteen minutes is just fine, while others say it really shouldn’t be longer than three to five minutes. Sitting a little longer every now and then is not a problem, as long as it is not too often.
