Several monarchs welcome Denmark’s new royal couple

A warm welcome for the new royal couple!

Queen Margrethe’s abdication took place within a few minutes, and after a final ‘Gud bevare Kongen’ the Danish queen left for home. After 52 years on the throne, she has of course built up several close friendships with fellow royals, and so many Euroyals remembered the big day.

Kind princes

They feel involved with their own population and have to build ties with all kinds of politicians and other prominent figures in their own country. Yet many royals still have some time behind the scenes to build friendships with their neighbors and fellow royals. During state visits and other outings we occasionally get a small glimpse of these mutual ties, but in general this all remains in accordance with the protocols and the real cordiality is saved for moments behind closed palace doors.

However, with the abdication of Queen Margrethe and the accession to the throne of King Frederik and Queen Mary, we once again see some beautiful expressions of mutual affection. Several monarchs have taken to writing to once again publicly thank Margrethe for her years of service – and of course to wish Frederik and Mary good luck. Since we live in the 21st century, these messages are of course also shared publicly via social media.

Godmother

For example, our own Royal House shared a friendly message on Instagram on behalf of King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Beatrix. “With warmth and affection we honor Queen Margrethe for her unconditional and outstanding commitment to Denmark. We look forward to meeting King Frederik

The Oranges of course have a close bond with the Danes – Queen Margrethe is even one of the godparents of our king. With their sweet message, the Royal House shares a series of photos of the various visits that took place on both sides. There are also some photos of Margrethe’s only state visit to Queen Juliana in 1975, and a set of images of the state visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima to Denmark in 2015.

Formal affair

Some other royals keep it simple. For example, Buckingham shares a message posted by Charles via Instagram, in which he briefly states that he looks forward to future collaborations with Frederik and Mary, and that he would like to thank Margrethe for her many years of service.

Not really hot, but good. It is not without reason that the Windsors are known for their stiff upper lip.

The Spanish Casa Real also keeps it short in a message that they share via X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Nuestra felicitación en el inicio de vuestro Reinado, con el mayor afecto personal y los mejores deseos para el pueblo de Dinamarca” 🇩🇰

“Our congratulations on the start of your Kingship, with our deepest personal affection and best wishes for the Danish people,” reads a snapshot of the recent state visit.

‘Dear Daisy’

However, we see some of the most extensive messages from (how could it be otherwise) Margrethe’s Scandinavian neighboring princes. Norwegian King Harald, for example, wrote a sweet message to his neighbors.

With a set of photos of both the new royal couple and the resigned queen, he congratulates Frederik and Mary on their new role. He then continues: “You succeed a monarch who has fulfilled her role admirably. With warmth, wisdom and devotion, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe guided her country and her people through joys and sorrows. For more than 50 years she has managed to be an attentive queen – with her infectious humor and thorough knowledge of the matter.” It is clear that Margrethe will be greatly missed by her fellow eighty-something year olds.

Yet one of the sweetest letters is from the (usually somewhat reserved) Swedish king, Carl Gustaf. “Dear niece Daisy!”, he begins his message. Ignore the protocol for a moment and just address your niece by her nickname – it doesn’t get much closer.

“As you resign from your high office as Queen of Denmark today, I would like to thank you very much for the good cooperation over the years. You now take on a different role, but the friendship between us remains – deep and constant,” it reads. Moreover, the Swedish Kungahuset has even chosen to really put Margrethe in the spotlight by sharing two separate messages: one for Margrethe and one for Frederik and Mary.

In his message to Frederik and Mary you can read that he would like to congratulate them on behalf of himself and the Swedish people. “This day reminds us of the historic community, closeness, and cordiality that connects our two countries and families,” it continues.

A good neighbor and a distant friend: the new royal couple can clearly count on a lot of cordiality from their fellow royals. Let those state visits begin!
