Patty: ‘Through the series I discovered that I have not yet processed everything’

“I really don’t ever want to go through this again.”

While the Netherlands was burdened by rain and dark clouds, Patty Brard lay on the beach of a sun-drenched Antillean island. Sure, it was a relaxing holiday, but there was also work to be done. In addition to our glowing photo shoot, we talk to her about that brand new drama series, her bond with her family, and her highs and lows so far.

‘terrifying’

Patty is enjoying life on sunny Curaçao – and that is clearly visible in the beautiful photos we take of her there. In addition, she was ready for a week in the sun: “To be honest, I thought I deserved this holiday. I was at the end of my rope. We have completed two moves and two renovations and I am extremely busy with work. Everything that appears requires preparation. The highlight is of course my drama series. That is terrifying.”

When we ask her why this series (after a reality show and a biography) is so scary, she explains: “Director Will Koopman came up with the idea to dramatize my life. I thought that was a strange idea, because a lot is already known about my life. Will said, “No one has ever fallen and gotten up as many times as you.” She also used the dive from the diving board as a metaphor (in the TV program Star Jumping, ed.). I fell really hard there, but I came back up. She insisted on incorporating that message into a dramatized version of my life.”

“I find it confrontational to watch. Some things make you think: it didn’t happen that way. It is also not my real story, but a dramatized version of my story.”

Process

Patty was heavily involved in the making of the series. And that made quite a difference, she noticed. “You first have to be able to tell the story before they can start playing with it. That’s why I had sessions with a team of writers in which I had to tell everything about my life. Those were very deep interviews and they were emotional and intense. I noticed that I had made unpleasant events from the past more beautiful in my head than they really were and I discovered that I have not yet processed everything.”

She also reveals: “I asked Antoine to stop me if they want to make a second series. I really don’t ever want to go through this again. You’re doing quite a bit to yourself, aren’t you? And then I haven’t even mentioned all the opinions I get again.”

Priscilla

Of course, there was also the big question: what does Priscilla actually think about the argument between mother and daughter being put in the spotlight again? “Will has also put a nice twist on that,” Patty shares. “It wasn’t stirred up the way it actually happened.”

But more importantly: the bond between Patty and Priscilla is simply stronger than ever. “Besides, no one will come between us anymore. That bond will never be broken again. I think we are strong enough to now be confronted with how things went wrong and it is good to face that too.”
