It’s your birthday, treats!
Although it was King Frederik’s birthday last weekend, it was the king himself who gave away the presents. He presented his wife, Queen Mary, with a special gift on the special day.
New title
Last Sunday there was a party in Amalienborg Palace: King Frederik celebrated his very first birthday as king. A new portrait came out and around noon the whole family gathered on the balcony of the palace. In addition to the presents that the reigning monarch will undoubtedly have received, the birthday boy himself was also in a generous mood. He gave his wife a special gift.
Grand Commander’s Cross
The Danish royal family recently announced that Frederik awarded his wife the Grand Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog on the occasion of his 56th birthday last Sunday. It is also known as the Order of the Danish Flag.
Grand Commander is the highest rank of the ‘Dannebrogorden’ from 1672 and is only given to royals related to the Danish Royal Family and to persons with close family ties to the Danish Royal House.
The glittering insignia, a cross covered in diamonds on a bow, is something Mary will likely wear on her left breast at all upcoming white tie events.

In good company
Mary is currently in the company of six other Grand Commanders. In addition to the King and Queen of Denmark, Queen Margrethe has a copy, as do Frederik’s younger brother Prince Joachim and their aunt, Princess Benedkeek. Outside this family circle, however, there are two more Grand Commanders to be found in their neighboring country: King Harald V of Norway and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
