Fortunately, this went completely well!
If anyone loves Christmas, it’s Princess Kate. But there is also a lot at stake for your Highness during the holidays. Especially when she spent her first Christmas with the Windsors and had to buy a present for none other than Queen Elizabeth herself!
Royal gift
You have undoubtedly wondered what exactly to gift to your partner’s second cousin or great-grandmother. Usually (after weeks of worrying) you can think of something that will benefit this distant relative, right?
But then imagine that this person actually has everything their heart desires. Castles, jewels, crowns, gowns, and so on. This was exactly the situation that Princess Kate faced when she celebrated her first Christmas with the rest of the Windsors at Sandringham in 2011. Traditionally, this also includes a cheerful exchange of gifts, which forced the then Duke of Cambridge to ask himself the special question: what little gift would the Queen appreciate?
Big risk
The princess revealed in an interview in 2016 that she decided to take an ambitious approach. “I really thought, ‘Gosh, what do I give her?’ And then I thought, ‘I’m going to make something for her.’ That really could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my grandma’s chutney recipe.” As if the pressure of arranging a present for your grandmother-in-law, who also happens to be the Queen, wasn’t enough, Kate put her special plan into motion.
Royal reception
And the result? Kate reveals that her creative gift turned out well! “I was a little worried about it, but I saw it on the table the next day.” Awww!
Kate continues that little touches like this from the Queen happened regularly. “Such a small gesture meant so much to me, and since then I’ve noticed that she does it very regularly. And I think it really shows her thoughtfulness and the attention she puts into taking care of everyone.”
In short: what do you give as a gift to someone who already has everything? A present that you put a lot of love into!
