After a spectacular world premiere and a successful reception in our own little country, we can now fully say that the Videoland series Máxima is a resounding success. The second season has already been announced, and no fewer than 25 countries have already purchased the series. So there is great interest in the love story of our royal couple. But what does Queen Máxima actually think of the film adaptation?
Maxima’s opinion
During the photo session on the beach of Scheveningen in the summer of 2023, Máxima was asked about her opinion about the series. There she emphasized that she is extremely happy that the Netherlands has artistic freedom, and has full confidence that the makers of both the book and the series have put their heart and soul into it. Will she watch the series herself? Probably not. The queen answers that question: “I don’t think so. I have not read the book either, and with all due respect to the makers and also to the writer – it will probably be of high quality – but I find it very strange to read about myself,” the queen explains.
Amalia and Alexia were also not ready to watch their parents’ love story. We understand that that would also seem somewhat uncomfortable to us. “We know our own mother, we don’t need to see someone else’s story about her. We are of course used to our parents being in the public eye, but we try not to pay so much attention to it ourselves,” explains Princess Amalia.

Premiere in Tuschinski
Where the series was viewed with enthusiasm was during the premiere in the Royal Theater Tuschinski in Amsterdam. Complete with the cast and performances by Krezip, who provided all the music for the series, it was a great party. The reactions are positive. “You really have the feeling that you know the people, that you get a peek inside their homes,” “You really see the love between two puppies,” were some of the responses. But besides all the swooning about the romance, there is also laughter about the series. “I thought it was a very iconic moment when Máxima said: I thought Alexander was a bit stupid,” said one of the responses.
Credibility
How would leading actors Delfina Chaves and Martijn Lakemeier, who play the role of the couple in love, actually feel about Máxima not watching the series? Chavez actually understands the woman whose skin she has crawled into very well. “I can really understand that if they made a series about my life, I would feel uncomfortable. It would be weird, I think,” she suggests. Still, she doesn’t quite believe that the royal couple will let the entire series pass them by. Her co-star Martijn also agrees with this. “If they made a series about you, you would be uncomfortable, but you would watch,” he adds. “Every evening, I would be aware every evening,” Delfina answers. “But publicly I would say: of course I’m not going to watch it.”
And we understand that at the editorial staff of Glamial. Because admittedly, if Máxima had been interested in the series, we would all have wanted to know afterwards what she thought of it, and to hear from her which details are actually based on the truth.
