An expert explains.
Heels: we have a love-hate relationship with it. They are so beautiful, but at the same time so painful. It is therefore not surprising that at the end of the evening we see all the heels in a corner of the dance floor. Yet there is a certain heel that you can wear all evening long. We will reveal which one this is.
Dancing shoes
We can lie about it, but wearing high heels is only a pleasure for the eyes. However, there is a different type of heel that is a lot more comfortable. For example, dance heels are not only designed to look good, but also to provide support and mobility to a dancer. But how is it possible that they are more comfortable than ‘normal’ heels?
Dr. Robert K. Lee, Chief of Podiatric Surgery, explains: “If someone wears a strappy heel, there is no support and that makes the shoe more unstable. If you think about the dancer who moves from side to side and shifts a lot, you need a lot of stability so you don’t trip or fall.”
Pain
“The higher your heel, the more weight is placed on that area,” Lee further explains about high heels. “The foot is not designed to focus all your weight on the base of your toes all the time. For many, the pain comes from compression on the sides. Some women have feet that are narrower in the front, making it easier for them to wear high heels. Unfortunately, some people are born with feet that are simply not suitable for heels, making it much more difficult for them.”
It’s a matter of trying it out
But is it really time to say goodbye to your ‘normal’ heels? That is entirely up to you, says Lee. “In the end, it’s just chopping. For example, the impression that they feel as comfortable as New Balance shoes is not realistic. But it will definitely be more comfortable than wearing a traditional stiletto. (…) Finding a heel that works for your foot is a matter of trial and error.”
