“I had to tell her what no one else told her.”
This week the book A Very Private School was published, written by none other than Charles Spencer – the brother of the late Princess Diana. In an interview ahead of publication, he revealed some special details about growing up alongside Lady Di.

Although Charles Spencer is best known to the general public as the brother of the late Diana, the ninth Earl Spencer has also built an impressive career as an author, especially in the field of history.
However, his latest book, A Very Private School, is a lot more personal in nature. For example, he openly talks about the violence and abuse he experienced as a little boy behind the closed doors of his boarding school.
In candid conversations surrounding the book, it is not only about these traumatic experiences, but also about his famous sister. For example, we already wrote that Diana felt that she had to protect her little brother, but later in life these roles would be reversed.
Royal sister
Charles and Diana were very close, and he witnessed the media storm surrounding Diana up close. For example, he remembers a dinner with his sister and a group of friends, shortly after she became a member of the royal family. “I remember thinking, ‘Crikey, they’re all rooting for her like crazy!’ Then I realized that my role was to be strong as a brother and just stay the same.”
“That was difficult at times, because I told her things that no one else told her in a loving, constructive way. And I think it was hard for her to hear anything other than how wonderful life was – but I felt like that was my job. I was her little brother. We grew up together.”
Well: if even your little brother doesn’t dare to tell you the truth, who will?
