We celebrate with a little throwback.
Today is a special day for the Oranges: it is 22 years ago that King Willem-Alexander and his Máxima got married.

On the beautiful date of February 2, 2002, our current king and queen tied the knot in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. A day you will never forget, both for the lovebirds themselves and for everyone who witnessed the royal wedding. And to refresh your memory – after all, it has been 22 years already – we share some fairytale snapshots of the big day:
And everyone also knows Máx’s iconic ‘teardrop’, which she shed during the wedding, when Astor Piazzolla’s music was played by Carel Kraayenhof. A beautiful moment, and one of the first times that we were able to see the then princess emotionally. Tears of happiness, that is!
Happily married
The two are now – it seems – still happily married, and the outside world is even talking about a true fairytale wedding. While the tabloid press in some royal families revels in one riot after another involving adultery or an illegitimate child, Wim-Lex and Máxima have never been ‘caught’ in such a ‘mistake’. Everyone will have a different opinion about it, but one thing is certain: Máxima and Willem-Alexander are extremely strong as a couple. We wonder what their relationship secret is. Is it the silly humor that the king and queen share? Is it the way they keep their private and business lives separate, or is it the shared love for their beautiful daughters?
Secret
Two years ago, royalty expert Annemarie de Kunder joined RTL Boulevard and revealed what she thinks is the secret of this royal couple. “What amazes me is that in those twenty years, nothing has ever come out to show that their marriage is not going well,” she began. “While some royal families have one riot after another because there is a miscreant among them or even a child has been fathered out of wedlock, this is not the case with Willem-Alexander and Máxima. There are even no reports of disagreement between the two or long-term arguments. As far as we know, of course.”
But what is the relationship secret of Willem-Alexander and Máxima? “If you ask me, one of the factors why they have lasted so long is their sense of humor,” Annemarie said. Our king appears to be able to pull off one lame joke after another, especially when the cameras are off. And while some people have to think about the joke for a while, Máx always gets it right away. “Sometimes one word or look is enough for them to understand what the other is saying and they then have to chuckle together like a couple in love.”
