She received the jewelry from her parents-in-law, former King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia.
Last Wednesday evening, a reception for the Diplomatic Corps was organized at the Zarzuela Palace. Of course, as a hostess you can’t arrive with a set of meaningless jewelry, and that’s why Queen Letizia conjured up a very special pair.
Married for 20 years
On May 22, 2024, there is reason to celebrate in Spain: on that day, Queen Letizia will have been married to her sweetheart King Felipe for 20 years. After the couple announced their engagement in 2003, which came as quite a surprise to the Spanish people to say the least, Felipe and Letizia got married at the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid.

The former newsreader lived up to her new title as princess in a beautiful wedding dress by Spanish fashion designer Manuel Pertegaz. She wore subtle diamond earrings and the then Queen Sofia lent her the Prussian tiara, which was made for Princess Victoria Louise in 1913.
Jewellery
So, on Wednesday evening, a reception for the Diplomatic Corps was organized at the Zarzuela Palace. For the occasion, the queen wore a navy blue dress and a diamond and sapphire necklace with a matching bracelet that looks suspiciously familiar. She received this set as a gift from her parents-in-law, former King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia, during her engagement to her husband Felipe.

The Instagram account @spanishroyaljewels reports that Queen Sofia received the necklace as a gift at her own wedding to Juan Carlos in 1962. Sofia has been spotted in public several times with the sapphire necklace around her neck, but Letizia only wore the wedding gift on one other occasion. Now, almost twenty years after the fairytale wedding of the Spanish king and queen, she is bringing out the showpieces again.
Throwback
In 2003, the whole of Spain suddenly turned upside down: the single Crown Prince Felipe seemed to announce his engagement to the handsome journalist and newsreader Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano out of nowhere. Apparently just days after the two were publicly introduced. And the exact story behind their relationship is still not completely clear.
According to the stories, Letizia met her great love during one of her journalistic jobs. The then Prince of Asturias turned out to be present here and the spark was said to have flown immediately. The couple then kept their relationship under the radar, until Letizia was suddenly introduced to the world in November 2003 as the fiancée of heir to the throne Felipe. This came as quite a shock to the Spanish people at the time, but they have since embraced their new queen for a long time.
