A real first for the monarchs.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima can prepare for an important visit. In April, fellow monarchs Felipe and Letizia will visit them. An official state visit is then planned.
State visit
There has been some speculation here and there, but now it’s official: King Felipe and Queen Letizia have a new outing to look forward to. Next spring they will exchange sunny Spain for our cold little country for two days. The Government Information Service announced today that the Spanish royal couple will come to the Netherlands on April 17 and 18 for a state visit to Willem-Alexander and Máxima.
10 years back in time
Although the planned visit will be Felipe and Letizia’s first official state visit to their fellow monarchs, it is not the first time they have had coffee together. Ten years ago, the Spanish royal couple already paid an introductory visit to Willem-Alexander and Máxima in the Netherlands.
At the time, Máx in particular seemed very happy to see the Spanish royals…
…And Wim-Lex and Felipe kept it an exceptionally brotherly greeting.

It has been a while since an official state visit from Spain to the Netherlands. That was in 2001, when Beatrix was still on the throne. She then received King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia in her palace. Since then, no official state visits have been exchanged between Spain and the Netherlands. In April it will be the first time that Willem-Alexander and Máxima Felipe and Letizia meet in this way.
Fashion battle
The Government Information Service has not yet announced what activities are planned for the two royal couples. Anyway: whatever their highnesses do next, we are of course ready to analyze Máx and Leti’s outfits down to the last detail. We are already preparing for a real fashion battle between the queens!
