This is why your hangover gets worse as you get older

Wake up with a dry mouth, pounding headache and immediately looking for a bucket? Yep, you’re suffering from a hangover. And strangely enough, the principle of ‘practice makes perfect’ does not apply, because your hangovers seem to become more and more intense as you get older. What causes that?

The older, the worse

We have good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad news: with age your ability to tolerate alcohol becomes increasingly poor. The good news is that you are not the only one who suffers from this. Somewhat reassuring? The American website Business Insider has made a video in which they explain in detail why hangovers get worse over the years. For example, they explain that the older we get, the more difficulty your body has in breaking down alcohol. It ensures that the substance ‘acetaldehyde’ remains in our body. And that substance is the cause of your headache and nausea.

Delayed degradation

Oh, and we have more bad news. The delayed breakdown process of alcohol also causes you to store more fat, on top of the fat that you already store naturally. Result? This fat cannot absorb the alcohol, so it remains in your blood for much longer. Have you ever woken up and felt like you were still drunk? So that’s because of this. And so it only gets worse. Cheers to that!
