This is why you should not use a hot water bottle for more than 5 years

In these times of immense cold, we prefer to carry our beloved hot water bottle with us day and night. But, this heat source is not only nice for the icy cold, but also a solution for many women during their menstruation and those terrible cramps. There is a good chance that you have such a jug at home, but be careful: if it is older than five years, you can no longer use it…

Throw away the jug after five years

If you were hoping that a heat friend would be a purchase you would never have to make again, we’re sorry to disappoint you. We explain the five-year rule to you. In most cases you naturally use a hot water bottle for warmth. You put hot (or almost boiling) water in it, which stays nice and warm for a while due to the material in the jug.

Now we don’t want to scare you, but what can go ‘wrong’ with such a heat friend is if it breaks or bursts open and all that boiling hot water flows over you. And that’s where the five-year rule comes in. If you have just bought a new one, you don’t have to worry. But, if you have taken one from the attic that you have not actually seen for years, it is good to check how many years you have not seen that thing.

Rubber cap

The problem lies with the rubber cap in the jug. The cap that stops all that hot water. If this cap is (much) older than five years, then the chance that it will burst is very high. There is nothing more you can do and all the hot water flows over you. This can be dangerous not only for you, but also for your baby or child, if you have the hot water bottle with them.

New cap

To avoid unpleasant surprises, it is always a good idea to check the cap for cracks and the like every time before use. Do you see something that is wrong or is the cap bulging? Then it’s really time to get a new cap or a whole new jug. Safety first!
