Brrrr: Frederik and Mary cool off during an official visit to Greenland

Get those winter coats out of the closet again!

Although earlier this week they were able to celebrate in a summery atmosphere with their son Christian that he had passed his exams, things will be different for the Danish King Frederik and Queen Mary in the coming days!

Greenland

Although Greenland is quite a distance from Denmark, the island in the Arctic is still part of the Danish kingdom. And as befits a brand new royal couple, a visit to the region must of course be made!

It is to be hoped that Frederik and Mary had not yet put away their woolen coats and royal sweaters now that summer has arrived. In Greenland the temperatures are just around freezing point. Brrr!

Arrival

Yesterday the royal couple arrived in style with their home away from home, the Dannebrog, in Pittufik. Here the couple was warmly welcomed by several local prominent figures. In the afternoon a visit to the North Greenland town of Qaanaaq was next on the agenda.

Fred himself has a special bond with this place: about 24 years ago, this was the starting and ending point of ‘Expedition Sirius 2000’, an almost 2,800-kilometre long journey with dogsleds through the beautiful – but harsh – Greenland landscape, which lasted four months.

The visit to the region also guaranteed a good dose of nostalgia. For example, the exact sleigh with which Frederik made his journey turned out to be still well preserved!

The visit also had a small sentimental edge for Mary: as the new crown princess, Qaanaaq was also one of the locations she visited with her husband shortly after their wedding.

Busy schedule

The royal couple will be in Greenland for the rest of the week. They will sail from location to location with their Dannebrog, visiting quite a few cities on the west coast of the island. Culture and local entrepreneurship will be celebrated.

By the way, we shouldn’t expect any great pomp and ceremony from this – apart from a few receptions, Their Highnesses will keep it down to earth. For example, we see a ‘Kaffemik’ planned several times in the program. And that’s just a nice moment of coffee with the locals, who can show themselves at their best to the royal couple. They have also remained so nice and normal!
