Hip hip, hurra!
Now that King Frederik has finally taken his place on the throne, there is of course a first time ‘as king’ for everything. The first gala portraits, the first state visit, and of courseā¦his first birthday! Frederik blew out 56 candles yesterday and that was celebrated.
Birthday boy
Frederik’s first birthday as reigning monarch did not go unnoticed. Birthday treats, so we could count on a royal snapshot. Tight uniform, neatly coiffed, and a determined look from the king. Check!

Still, we naturally wanted to see Frederik live in action on his first anniversary on the throne. Around noon, the birthday boy and his wife Queen Mary appeared on the balcony of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. Of course, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, Princess Josephine and Queen Margrethe soon followed, who were also present.
It was a festive affair with a lot of waving and cheering.

And that resulted in some beautiful snapshots.
And such a celebration does not have to be so stiff and stately for the Danes. Someone’s birthday? Then you just sing along at the top of your lungs. Queen Margrethe in particular took advantage of it and showed off her singing skills to the audience.
Throne change
On January 14, Queen Margrethe’s 52 years on the throne came to an unexpected end. This was not accompanied by a lot of fanfare, spectacle, pomp and circumstance as we saw last year at Charles’s coronation, but with a healthy dose of Scandinavian down-to-earthness.
Margrethe wrote a note, said goodbye with tears in her eyes, and less than an hour later King Frederik X’s proclamation followed from the balcony in Christiansborg. With yesterday’s balcony scene, King Frederik continued a long tradition. My mother always celebrated her birthday this way.
