Silver wedding: Prince Edward and Sophie celebrate wedding anniversary with romantic snapshot

This beloved, stable royal couple has been together for 25 years!

Today is June 19, or should we say: the day of love? Because today is not only a double celebration in Sweden, where both King Carl Gustaf and daughter Crown Princess Victoria celebrate their wedding anniversary, but the British royal family can also raise its flag. The youngest son of the late Queen Elizabeth, Prince Edward, has been together with his great love, Sophie Rhys-Jones, for 25 years. And to celebrate, Buckingham Palace is treating us to a beautiful and, above all, romantic snapshot of the beloved couple.

Stable factor

Like all marriages, the marriage of Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie also had ups and downs. When the couple started dating in 1993, the British royal family was in a period full of divorce and scandals. After exactly three of her children’s marriages ended, the late Queen Elizabeth longed for a stable relationship for one of them, but whether she was immediately so fond of Sophie…

Edward’s mother thought her youngest son’s then girlfriend was rather ordinary. “You wouldn’t notice her in a crowd of people,” Her Majesty said at the time. We now know that Sophie grew into perhaps the Queen’s favorite daughter-in-law and she and her great love Prince Edward have been fulfilling their royal role with gusto for years.

Romantic snapshot

Today Edward and Sophie have been married for 25 years and that should of course be celebrated. That’s why Buckingham Palace has released a romantic portrait showing the royal couple very happy. The two posed for the lens of photographer Chris Jelf in the garden of their house in Bagshot Park and, let’s be honest: even after all these years, their marital happiness is still evident.

Subdued wedding

So the couple is celebrating their silver wedding anniversary, reason enough for us to look back on their big day 25 years ago. Although a proposal from Prince Edward did not materialize for years, he did get down on one knee for Sophie at the end of 1998. The couple, as suits them perfectly, opted for a subdued wedding at Windsor Castle. Yet reportedly some 200 million people watched the wedding of Queen E’s youngest son on television.

After the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh tied the knot, the royal couple welcomed two children. Their daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, was born on November 8, 2003 and their son, James, Earl of Wessex, was born on December 17, 2007.
