Throwback: this is what we know about our queen’s wedding dress

Everything about Queen Máxima’s iconic dress!

It was recently announced that Queen Máxima’s wedding dress can soon be viewed up close in the Fries Museum. Before that happens, we look back at the wedding dress she wore on February 2, 2002, that beautiful date on which she married her lover, Prince Willem-Alexander. Who was the designer of this beautiful copy and what was the price tag? This is everything you want to know about Máxima’s wedding dress!

Glamorous appearance

The Argentinian beauty has developed her own style over the years. Máxima Zorreguieta became engaged to the Prince of Orange, Willem-Alexander, and thus became not only the bride-to-be, but also a favorite of royal fashion lovers.

Everywhere Queen Máxima goes, she appears in a glamorous outfit. A beautiful dress could not be missed at her wedding. It may have been more than twenty years ago when Máxima married Wim-lex, but her dress remains iconic.

The designer

In her first years as a princess, Máxima tended towards outfits with a bit more simplicity. Her wedding dress from Valentino is a good example of this. The silhouette, a subtle turtleneck neckline and the three-quarter sleeves give the dress a calm appearance. Not only was the gown hand-designed by Valentino Garavani, the founder of the Italian fashion house was also given the honor of designing the train. Just like the gown, the train is also made by hand. The train they designed is five meters long and is full of floral and lace details, an exception to the simplicity of the dress.

The price

It is said that the wedding gown, with all that handiwork, will cost around €100,000. A bargain when you consider the cost of Princess Kate’s wedding gown. Her gown is estimated at around €260,000.

The tiara

In addition to the train, Máxima also wore a striking tiara with diamonds and pearls. You know it’s a royal wedding when the bride wears a tiara with family stones. According to jeweler Steltman, responsible for maintenance of the jewelry, the tiara that Máxima wore was made in 1965. The diamond stars on Máxima’s tiara were actually worn as brooches and come from the collection of Queen Wilhelmina. With this tiara, Queen Máxima’s predecessors are already represented in her tiara.

Knowing more?

Máxima’s wedding dress will soon be on display in a museum. This autumn the brand new exhibition yes, I want will open in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden. Sixty wedding gowns will be exhibited here. The oldest in this collection comes from the eighteenth century. In addition, dresses from fashion brands beloved by Máxima, such as Viktor&Rolf, Iris van Herpen and Jan Taminiau, can also be admired.
