The new royal couple looks beautiful.
We know, of course, that there will be a lot to consider when a new monarch is on the throne. The Danish court has once again been able to cross one of those many tasks off their list, because yesterday they shared the first official gala portraits of their new royal couple!
Throne change
On January 14, Queen Margrethe’s 52 years on the throne came to an unexpected end. This was not accompanied by a lot of fanfare, spectacle, pomp and circumstance as we saw last year at Charles’s coronation, but with a healthy dose of Scandinavian down-to-earthness.
Margrethe wrote a note, said goodbye with tears in her eyes, and less than an hour later King Frederik X’s proclamation followed from the balcony in Christiansborg.
Royal snapshots
Well, of course there is a lot involved behind the scenes with such a changing of the guard – including creating a set of regal portraits. In January we were already treated to a set of first photos of the royal family. Anyway: there also had to be a number of gala portraits that could be hung in government buildings, Danish embassies, and Danish ships, for example.
In these new photos of the royal couple, they are captured both together and apart in full regal regalia.

In the images the two are of course wearing their honorary pins and chains of honor of the Order of the Elephant, the highest order of knighthood in the Danish kingdom. Frederik is wearing his dress uniform of the Danish navy and a saber that belonged to his grandfather, the late King Frederik IX.
Queen Mary also has a scoop with her look: it is the first time that HM wears a diadem from the crown jewels! For the occasion she opted for the emerald tiara, which matches perfectly with her deep green gown by designer Birgit Hallstein.
Closeup
Special detail: the Danish Crown Jewels – when they are not on the Queen’s head – can be admired up close in the basement of the Rosenborg Museum. The emerald parure is one of four sets that you can view here. Moreover, you can’t count on Mary ever taking these gems with her on a state visit abroad. That is strictly prohibited. We can’t wait for the next gala outing in our own country – who knows if Mary will opt for the emerald parure again. In any case, it doesn’t look out of place on her!
