Now that King’s Day is coming again, you can sell all your old stuff on the flea market. But how do you prepare properly?
The best place
You may know it: people who claim their spot on the street days or even weeks in advance with sidewalk chalk and duct tape for the free market. This also means that if you do sit in a ‘reserved’ spot, you will be met with disappointed and angry people. And you don’t want that. Therefore, make sure that you also choose a good place. For example, choose a spot on the largest streets in the city, or near the station. This is where most people pass by and most people can see you.
Stand out on King’s Day
Stand out! At a flea market full of somewhat the same dresses and stalls (read: everything in orange or just rubbish), it is important that you stand out with your stand. Hang up streamers and balloons, put a nice tablecloth or duvet cover over the ugly sail, make sure things look clean and organized and wear something nice yourself. Extra tip: if you offer something tasty you can also ask for money!
Determine goal
Before you sell your stuff, think about why you are at the King’s Day free market. Do you want to get rid of your old stuff, and could your attic, shed or cellar cupboard use some more space? Or do you sell things to achieve another goal, such as being able to save more quickly for that one trip? It is very important that you know why you are at the flea market, because this reason can be very decisive for the prices you charge. If you would like to empty your attic and you charge high prices for the items, you can take most of these items back to the attic at the end of the day.
Pleasure
You are there in your spare time, it is a holiday and everyone is in a good mood: so make it a party! Put on some nice music and have a chat or a dance with passers-by. Of course, the intention is for it to be a pleasant King’s Day, so make the most of it. Even when it rains you can bring out the sun in people, so always keep smiling and get to know new people. King’s Day is also a day of solidarity, which is very important.
