The royals may not lead the most average lives, but they are certainly committed to our planet. In fact, several royal members have set up wonderful initiatives to do their part and create awareness about the environment. In honor of Earth Day today, we’re shining a light on how our beloved royals are handling it.
Earth Day was created in 1970 and has been an annual event ever since. Today, on April 22, we commemorate the preservation of our planet worldwide. And the members of the royal families also contribute.
And not just any one, because our green royals are busy with it! For example, they set up foundations, organize events and fund actions to contribute to environmental protection.
Charles’s tireless efforts
Whose efforts are almost unsurpassable is that of the British King Charles. Long before he was crowned king in 2022, Charles was committed to raising awareness about the well-being of our planet. For example, he warned of the major consequences of pollution and the danger of ‘climate deniers’. Following those statements, in the 1980s he decided to transform his farm near Gloucestershire, called Home Farm, into an organic luxury, by, among other things, minimizing the use of antibiotics and other harsh chemicals. With this enormous passion project, the king took the necessary steps to minimize his impact on our dear planet and protect the environment.
In the years that followed, he founded various foundations that contributed in various areas. It all started with Duchy Organic, an initiative that perfectly matched the working methods on his organic farm. The brand aimed to market local products from its farm. The brand has now grown into a large organic food brand that invests its proceeds in ecological initiatives such as Net Zero, Terra Carta and Soil Health. Applause for Charles!
My dear son
His father’s generous efforts have not left Prince William untouched. He also takes the necessary steps to promote planetary conservation. For example, the prince established the Earthshot Prize in 2020, for which John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot project was the great inspiration. The global initiative is based on five ‘Earthshot’ goals: Protecting and restoring nature, improving the climate, creating healthy, clean air, restoring the oceans and creating a waste-free world.
Every year the initiative awards a prize of no less than 1 million pounds in each category. The big, ambitious goal of his initiative is to provide at least fifty solutions to our world’s biggest environmental problems by 2030. Just as ambitious as his father, William is certainly making a name for himself as a benefactor for the climate.
It’s not just the British royal family that cares about the planet. Prince Frederik of Denmark also often committed himself in unique ways. For example, in 2011 the prince cycled for the ‘Together we fight climate change’ project in Vietnam. We will just forget for a moment what impact the flight from Denmark for this cycling marathon had on the environment, nun?
