Everyone suffers from headaches sometimes. This could be for various reasons. Maybe you didn’t have enough fresh air, or you shouldn’t have watched TikToks until 3 a.m. But guess what? This (for some) daily habit can also cause a major headache.
This drink can cause a headache
It may be hard to believe, because health gurus always speak so highly of it. It turns out that tea can cause headaches… And we thought this drink was so healthy for you (that’s why we drink it so much). Ultimately, tea is healthy for you, but it also contains theine; the substance that gives you energy, but unfortunately also a headache if you are unlucky. We’ll explain it to you.
Theine
Theine in tea provides energy, but when you drink tea all day long – and therefore ingest theine – your blood vessels around your brain constrict. If you stop consuming it, your blood vessels will dilate somewhat, which can cause a headache.
Which tea?
Theine is the same type of substance as caffeine, which you can find in coffee, for example. It occurs naturally in tea leaves from the tea plant called Camellia Sinensis. Any tea that also contains tea leaves, such as black, green and white tea, also contains theine! Ultimately, it means that drinking too much caffeinated tea can have the same effects as drinking too much coffee. So a headache!
To prevent this, it might be better to drink tea without theine more often. Think of nettle tea, ginger or herbal tea.
Migraine
Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there… A study has shown that certain ingredients used in tea can worsen migraine symptoms. This includes, for example, ginkgo biloba, ginseng and St. John’s wort. This is especially true if you take migraine medications. These ingredients reduce its effectiveness.
