Are Máxima and Letizia actually friends?

We don’t seem to be able to speak of royal besties.

Thanks to her likeable personality, Máxima has managed to build quite a few friendships in the royal world. For example, we know that Your Highness is besties with neighboring Queen Mathilde and has good contact with all kinds of princesses. But what about fellow queen Letizia?

Agreements

At first glance we see many similarities between Máxima and Letizia. They are about the same age, have an undeniable sense of fashion, are mothers of a pair of beautiful daughters and, not to mention, lost their hearts to a prince in their twenties. Add to that the fact that they have the same native language, and you would think they are great friends.

Differences

In reality, however, the close friendship we had imagined seems not to be so bad. And that may have something to do with the fact that in addition to those similarities, there are also some (major) differences between the queens.

For starters, they have quite different personalities. Where Máxima always enters a room radiant and chats with everything and everyone around her, Letizia is a lot more subdued. These differences in personality also color the way in which both queens fulfill their roles. We know our Máx as a spontaneous royal who is up for a bit of fun, Leti has earned the nickname ‘Royal Robot’ due to her extremely disciplined attitude.

In addition, the royal ladies also seem to have a different parenting method as mothers. While Amalia is sometimes spotted at a society party, life looks much more serious for fellow Crown Princess Leonor. Although that could of course also be due to the mentality of the girls themselves.

Speculations

Anyway: those differences between Máxima and Letizia seem to get in the way of a close friendship. During royal events, the queens say hello to each other in a friendly manner, but that’s about it. There are also royalty watchers who claim that Letizia is suspicious because Máxima is friends with Letizia’s sister-in-law Infanta Cristina, a controversial family member from whom Leti wants to keep as much distance as possible. However, it remains a matter of speculation whether this is the reason for the lack of a good bond between the queens.

State visit

On Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 April, King Felipe will pay a state visit to the Netherlands at the invitation of our Willem-Alexander, and the royal wives will of course also be present. We are curious how fun that will be!
