Our own Oranges certainly have traditions, but countries around us still take the cake. It is therefore not common for an ingrained custom to be broken. Queen Letizia of Spain recently took the plunge, destroying years of royal tradition.
Traditions
Lately, traditions are no longer taken very seriously in the Spanish royal family. For example, the rules for the peerage are currently being examined, which means that from now on it is possible for a woman to come to the throne. However, with daughters Leonor and Sofía, the chance of a male heir seemed to be off, and well. That change in the law subsequently ended up in a large pile somewhere with a Spanish official, and the Spaniards are not in a great hurry to implement the change in the law for the time being.
First wife
However, Letizia is pushing ahead with a newly introduced rule. She has hired a woman as head of the Queen’s Secretariat. María Dolores Ocaña Madrid, a state lawyer, has been hired as Queen Letizia’s right-hand woman. This makes her the first woman ever to hold this position. María is currently Chief Counsel at the Ministry of Education and will replace José Manuel Zuleta, Duke of Abrantes, who has held this position for the past ten years. María’s appointment officially begins on April 30.
State visit
Next week Letizia and Felipe will come to the Netherlands for a state banquet. They will have dinner there with Queen Máxima, King Willem-Alexander and Crown Princess Amalia. It is the first time for Amalia to attend an official state visit. The state banquet is on April 17 in the Royal Palace Amsterdam, in the Citizens’ Hall, which is specially decorated with Dutch flowers for the occasion. We are already curious about the photos!
