Princess Kate treats the Irish Guards to Guinness beer

We toast to that!

Because Kate was still recovering from her abdominal surgery and was diagnosed with cancer, Princess Kate unfortunately had to miss the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. She normally attends this parade every year as a colonel of the Irish Guards, but the circumstances made it the first parade she missed in seven years, according to The Sun.

Cheers!

The Princess may not have been physically there last week, but she certainly showed that she was thinking of the Irish Guards. According to The Daily Mail, the princess spent around $2,500 on the bar so that the Irish Guards could enjoy half a liter of Guinness beer per person. To remember Kate and thank her, the members of the Irish Guards gave her three cheers, raising their bearskin helmets in the air as a sign of respect.

In addition to footing the bar bill, Prince William and Princess Kate also posted about the Irish Guards on their shared Instagram. They wrote: “Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Here’s a sneak peek at the @irishguards rehearsing for the annual parade. Cheers to everyone celebrating today!”

Colonel of the Irish Guards

Since December 2022, Kate can call herself Colonel of the Irish Guards. Her father-in-law, King Charles, gave her this honorary title. According to People, the princess has attended the parade several times with her husband Prince William. William was allowed to appoint himself Colonel of the Irish Guards for Kate, which he previously said was one of the ‘greatest honors of my life’.

Due to Kate’s absence, her role had to be partly taken over this year. People says: “Princess Kate’s traditional role of handing out sprigs of shamrock to the Irish Guards for their uniforms was this year carried out by Lady Ghika, wife of the regiment’s lieutenant colonel, Major General Sir Christopher Ghika. As well as presenting the shamrocks, dog lover Kate normally greeted Irish wolfhound Turlough Mor, known as Seamus. As a colonel, she would also receive the royal salute.”
