Washing your hair every day: how bad is that really?

We’ll tell you in advance: it’s not that bad.

While we used to wash our hair en masse every day, in 2024 it is especially hip to wash your hair as little as possible. It would be disastrous for your locks. But is that actually true?

The struggles of procrastination

If it works for your hair and lifestyle to only wash your locks once every five days, good for you! But just a quick survey of the Marie Claire editorial staff tells us that many women struggle with their hair washing routine. It’s almost rocket science to figure out when it’s best to wash your hair. Because yes, you don’t want to go to that party with greasy locks, but you also don’t want to wash your hair on a non-wash day.

But what are we talking about? It’s about something as ‘simple’ as washing your hair. We know the claim that washing your hair often is bad, and that’s why we worry a lot about hair washing routines and times. But is it really that bad to wash your hair every day, or every other day? Or is it not that bad?

How bad is it?

To answer the question straight away: it is not bad for your hair to wash it every day. This is what trichologist Susie Hammond says in conversation with The Mirror. “It’s not true at all that washing your hair every day will make your hair dry,” she says. “Your hair gets hydration from the water and the atmosphere around it. Don’t forget that your scalp is also skin and that skin is constantly shedding dead skin cells.” And the only way to get rid of those dead skin cells (and sweat and other dirt)? Indeed, by washing your hair with a good shampoo.

For some people it may be better to wash their hair more often. According to the hair specialist, it can greatly improve your scalp. “All the dirt collects on the scalp. The scalp is a lipid-rich and moist environment, and a healthy scalp naturally thrives yesterday. These can overgrow and cause dandruff if they build up. We therefore want to keep the scalp environment clean and you can only do this by washing it thoroughly.”
